First of all, when you do look at used Toyota cars, do insist on seeing the previous owner's service history. Check that the car has been regularly serviced according to the set service plan.
When the car goes for a service, the mechanic will check that everything is working properly. He will therefore be able to pick up any possible malfunctions that the car has. Often the car might have a minor error, like a tiny oil leak, that you might not even be aware of. But if it is not picked up early, the tiny leak could become a much bigger leak, which in the long run could become harder and harder to fix.
For the same reason you should continue to have the car regularly serviced by a trusted mechanic once you've bought it.
Always listen out for strange or new noises or squeaks that your car is making. It might just be something small, but it is worth taking the car to your mechanic to have it checked out, and fixed if necessary.
